Leadership Corner

Who We Don't See
by Jo Anne Preston, RWHC
Years ago while I was facilitating a discussion among elementary school students on the topic of substance abuse, the teacher pulled me aside and reminded me to allow some girls to speak up. Apparently the boys raised their hands quicker and higher (research supports this), and I had been calling on them 100% of the time. I felt terrible. I didn’t even notice I was doing this. At a recent meeting of nursing leaders, sharing our top ten leadership books, someone pointed out that they were all written by white men. My response to this was, “Well, that just &*%^$es me off.” Don’t get me wrong, I’m not angry at white men for writing great books. I am irritated that again I didn’t notice.

National Rural Health Day: Celebrate the Power of Rural - Share your network's story
NCHN will be Celebrating the Power of Rural Health Networks on National Rural Health Day, November 20, 2014.

Please join us in celebrating the power of rural by submitting your network's story. You can submit any story that tells of the work your network is doing to improve rural health. This may be a best practice model, success story, or lesson learned (aka triumphant effort with abysmal results). The important thing is telling the story of the work you and your members are doing every day to strengthen rural health.

Stories will be shared on November 20, 2014, and featured in the NCHN e-News, NetworkTools.NCHN.org, and in RAConline.org's Rural Health Models and Innovations.

Funding Announcements

Rural Health Network Development Planning Program
The purpose of the Network Planning program is to assist in the development of an integrated healthcare network, if the network participants do not have a history of formal collaborative efforts. Health care networks can be an effective strategy to help smaller rural health care providers and health care service organizations align resources and strategies, achieve economies of scale and efficiency, and address challenges more effectively as a group than as single providers. The Network Planning program promotes the planning and development of healthcare networks in order to: (i) achieve efficiencies; (ii) expand access to, coordinate, and improve the quality of essential health care services; and (iii) strengthen the rural health care system as a whole.
(Deadline: January 9, 2015)

ORHP will be hosting a webinar on this opportunity for NCHN members on Monday, November 17th at 2:00 PM ET. Details will be sent via email.
