RWHC Leadership Insights: "Hit Pause"
In weight lifting, it’s recommended you do as many reps-with care and control-as you can, until you can do no more... Research on highly successful athletes reveals a key strategy for success with this very pattern: push yourself as far as you can, then recover. If our work was like that, we would work hard, give it our all, and take breaks throughout... but we’re often not good at the “take breaks” part.

Monthly Column: The Incredible, Credible Leader

Wait. That’s a contradiction, isn’t it? After all, to say that someone is “credible” means they are believable, trustworthy and reliable. If they are “incredible,” we’re saying they are unbelievable or not to be trusted, right? Well, yes—and no. Because it can also mean they are extraordinary, as in “Her’s was an incredible story of perseverance and triumph.” In fact, we often use the word “incredible” to describe something that’s really, really good.

So what does it take to be the incredible credible leader of an organization that is committed to improving the health status of its members? It’s really pretty simple—it means you are believable and can be trusted. But once again, simple isn’t always easy.

2014 NCHN Annual Educational Conference
Date and Location Changed! Please note that the 2014 NCHN Annual Educational Conference will be held in June 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri. More details will about the change will be shared over the next few weeks. Please mark your calendar for the week of June 15-20, 2014. See you in St. Louis!

NCHN Executive Coaching Program
NCHN members represent a body of very experienced leaders in network sustainability. The NCHN Board believes that this leadership approach should also be shared with new Network Leaders as a way for all of us to continually learn from one another and improve. NCHN has developed an Executive Coaching Team and are looking for network leaders that would be interested in sharing their knowledge and expertise with other network leaders through a peer mentoring coaching arrangement. The first training session was offered on July 23 and is available for replay if you are interested in joining the team. Please contact Rebecca for replay details. The second training session will be held on Tuesday, August 13 @ 1:00 PM ET. Any NCHN member interested in serving as a coach to new or beginning network leaders, please let Rebecca know. Thanks to the members that have already joined the team!

Monthly Coffee/Tea Chat Program
The intent of the Coffee/Tea Chat Program is to provide network leaders with the opportunity to connect with their peers. The chats are free and one of NCHN membership benefits. The monthly, one-hour call provides network leaders with the opportunity to discuss whatever their current challenge may be, gather input from peers; share a recent success story; share something fun taking place in their networking life; or just enjoy the coffee or tea and listen to what other network leaders are doing.

On the July Coffee/Tea Chat, Dr. Chess lead a stimulating discussion on the posted topic, The Impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in your Network: Intended and Unintended Consequences. Participants on the chat talked shared the continuing uncertainty within their communities and membership regarding the implementation of the ACA. We even heard from one network leader, who’s state lawmakers had passed a house bill that prevented organizations from implementing the bill; however, the senate adjourned without taking action on the bill, thus ending the stance of non-implementation of the ACA. Another network leader discussed how to share information with the network board and members, especially if the project or activity had not been as successful as anticipated. Haven’t we all been in that situation? This network leader has turned “unsuccessful outcomes” into “learn our lessons” – meaning “let’s learn from this and move forward.”

If you missed the July Chat, please mark your calendars now and save Wednesday, August 21 @ 12:00 PM ET for the next one! If you have never participated on a chat, here’s some comments we received from the recent survey with NCHN members about the program – “ Thank you for holding them. It is nice to have the support and dialogue.” “The sessions with Mary Kay have been great. She has so much personal experience and knowledge to share and is an excellent facilitator!” “Thank you for all your work on providing this forum (Chats). We appreciate it!”

NCHN Membership Benefit Survey Closing Soon
NCHN is your organization and the program and services available through your membership benefits are determined by you and the other members. The Program Development Committee is charged with overseeing the program offerings for the Association. The 2013 Program Development Committee is seeking input from the membership to assist them in developing their Work Plan for 2013-2014. They are seeking feedback on the programs and services NCHN currently provides, as well as suggestions for potential programs or services you would like to see NCHN consider providing in the future. If you have not completed the survey or did not receive a personal email with the link to the survey, please let Rebecca know. We need your input!
