NCHN Member Sponsors Its First Telemedicine Consults in Dermatology

Tappahannock, VA - The first telemedicine consults in dermatology occurred on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at a new outpatient clinic sponsored by Riverside Tappahannock Hospital and the Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Telehealth Consortium (NNMPTC). The location of the clinic is in Medical Arts Building A, at 659 Hospital Road in Tappahannock. The NNMPTC office is in the same location.

I recently had the privilege, as a member of the Board of the National Rural Health Association, of speaking to the U.S. House Appropriations, Subcommittee on Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. The point I tried to make in my testimony is how vitally important healthcare is in rural America economically.

We have just completed a member-satisfaction survey. We sent a 10-question survey to 500 of our 2,100 Rx for the Uninsured members and received 137 replies. Our members gave us all A’s. What really touched me, though, was the comments the members made. I thought I would share a few:

All of us working with the Central Georgia Cancer Coalition are excited about the establishment of an American Cancer Society Patient Navigator Program at the Medical Center of Central Georgia for oncology patients and their care givers. This unique program guides cancer patients through their cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and remission.

Since March of 2006, the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative has been an approved vendor for the CAHPS Hospital Survey Program. RWHC uses the mail methodology approved by CMS. They currently have 40 hospitals across 16 states taking advantage of the web-based reports and data uploads.

Mercy Hospital Extends Relationship with Synernet

Mercy Hospital President, Eileen Skinner, recently announced an extension of their current relationship with Synernet for medical transcription services. “The major reasons for this decision were our good experience with Synernet in the past with respect to transcription services, our confidence that they can continue our 24/7 access to transcription services for our physicians and mid-level providers, and our need for a transcription provider that can provide transcription services efficiently,” states Skinner.
